This is the week where we are all thinking about who and what we are thankful to have in our lives.rachaelandgrandparents.jpg

We recently returned from bringing my parents to visit our oldest daughter in Florida where she is in her third year of college. During our visit, my father accompanied my daughter to a class lecture on arthropods (bugs!). He was able to banter with the professor while sitting next to his granddaughter, who truly enjoyed the experience.I am grateful for the memories Continue reading november barnstable patriot column…

a (final?) discussion about hate blogs ….

……  should these people be taking costly staff  time  and energy in their continued effort to garner attention? Is this what you want your town staff and officials to be doing with their time?

There are some councilors who have let me know they are uncomfortable with me discussing these hate-bloggers on my own blog.

I agree, I would like to use this blog as a tool to disseminate information about our town, positions on current town issues, and personal observations about life……  I don’t want to rehash negative trash talk being spewed on other blogs.  These fellows lost their races for office. The people have spoken.  But they won’t let it go.

I realize this only feeds their need for attention, and I hope to make this my last or one of my last posts about these men.

In the past 24 hours John Julius has posted several comments on this blog which I have refused to moderate, I couldn’t even edit them to keep them w/in my own standards, and within the standards of WordPress’s Terms of Service (TOS). So they didn’t make it to the page for all to read.  His personal attacks on people, his use of profanity and insults are not going to make it to the pages of this blog, unless we are looking at them as examples of costly staff time as used below.

These guys who seem to have way too much time on their hands have found ways to be disruptive to the management of this town, and ultimately cost this town money and staff time, again!

Therefore, I will reluctantly consider Schwaab’s hate blog as there ARE two issues that I do feel we need to bring to light. Continue reading a (final?) discussion about hate blogs …….

Throughout the news coverage of our water crisis of this past Veteran’s Day weekend, there has been a media obsession with what some term as a “reverse 911 system.”

I watched as channel 5’s Amalia Baretta delivered the news about the tests coming back clean, as a small part of a report about how residents in Hyannis were unhappy that the town “didn’t use it’s reverse 911 system.”

This name, reverse 911, is misleading. Continue reading reverse 911 system is not *really* 911 in reverse…

water tank tests clean, e.coli levels were minute …. the rest of the story ….

November 14, 2007 at 9:09 pm | In barnstable town council | 3 Comments

The story in Wednesday’s Cape Cod Times was all about a phone system …… what about the actual tests, results, plans to prevent future problems, etc?

After a lengthy press conference where staff explained the results of tests that explained the levels of E. coli found in the storage tank, the process used to eliminate that E. coli and measures being taken to examine how it got there, where it came from and what will be done in the future, the daily paper focused on a phone system that we have only taken as a trial, (more on that this in a subsequent post.)

The news yesterday should have been about the facts about what was found in the water, how much Continue reading water tank tests clean, e.coli levels were minute …. the rest of the story …….

a brief word about this weekend’s water crisis in hyannis

November 12, 2007 at 9:46 pm | In Barnstable DPW, barnstable, barnstable town council, barnstable water company, hyannis, hyannis water, john julius | 22 Comments

(as I try to get caught up on work, I did not add a post yesterday and might not today, but encourage you all to read the comments here on this post as there is an interesting discussion taking place. Please feel free to add your own comments, I ask that you stay within the guidlines, however.)

I was still in Florida when phone calls started coming in late Saturday night. I spent much of the day yesterday on the phone from out of state as our staff worked to resolve the issues surrounding the water company’s older storage tank.

The storage tank tested positive for E. coli and the water was to be treated as the tank would be repaired.

Despite the fact that the tank was being processed to get rid of any harmful bacteria and the active water supply remained untouched, on Saturday night the state issued a mandate that a press release be sent, and protocol for such, designed by the state, was followed.

It is a little frustrating to note that all of this was done despite the fact that no bacteria was ever found in the supply of water being delivered to users, and Continue reading a brief word about this weekend’s water crisis in hyannis…

does low voter turnout mean voters haven’t spoken? no, that is not how local politics work

The wife of a candidate who was not elected to the charter commission left a comment on a previous post here on this blog that got me thinking.

After responding to another commenter, she made note of the fact that “26,000” voters did not come to the polls, somehow suggesting that they might come out next time make the changes she and her husband had wanted.

Noting her comments about the election turnout I want to share a story with you from Brevard County Florida, where we are visiting family.

Although we don’t own a home here, we have begun to feel this area is a second home, as our we come here to visit her often and stay in a local family owned place.

This area is a middle class. The city of Melbourne is a little larger than Hyannis, with a larger airport, a community college and a Technology University started by NASA.

People who live here are retired or work in local jobs at from NASA, where people work in a range of occupations from scientists and engineers to security and maintenance; to the hotel and restaurant industry and jobs that range from minimum wage to substantial salaries.

The area where we stay is an affordable area to live and we find ourselves watching local meetings in slow times. It is very interesting to see how this beach-side city deals Continue reading does low voter turnout mean voters haven’t spoken? no, that is not how local politics work…

good vs. evil? positive vs. negative? barnstable residents speak with their vote

November 7, 2007 at 3:56 pm | In barnstable town council, charter comission, cog, cogger | 10 Comments

For people who pay attention to, are involved in, or care about local politics and our municipal government, there has been an overwhelming sense of concern about yesterday’s election throughout the past few weeks.

Would people actually believe and vote for these people who have been yelling about conspiracies and corruption throughout our local government, or will they believe that there are people holding office and on staff in this town who are trying to do the best with what they have?

Do all of the awards and recognitions we receive outside of this town, state-wide, and nationally mean anything to our neighbors? Do they even know about any of the good news that is rarely reported because “studies show that good news doesn’t sell newspapers?”

As we were pummeled on blogs and in newspapers with slurs and insults Continue reading good vs. evil? positive vs. negative? barnstable residents speak with their vote…
