A place to hate - graffitti, guns and gadflies

(update- there have been several comments submitted while we were away, I will be going through those comments and approve them one at a time - keep checking as there are some interesting comments)
Recent graffiti on the doors of churches, on school buildings and around Hyannis have drawn the attention of Gary Lopez, John Julius and their local hate-blog.
As police try to do their jobs — investigating the incidents, trying to find details of those who have tagged these places with symbols of hate – the local bloggers have had a field day using these incidents to somehow illustrate that Barnstable’s No Place for Hate committee isn’t doing its job.
The committee’s place for these issues is not to draw public attention to incidents that may or may not be hate-crimes with mass emails and demands that we do more. I received a series of these emails and it was nothing short of disappointing that a couple of members within the committee would add more negative energy to an already ugly incident, while drawing more attention to it. This committee should provide support if requested by the victims, and should be focused on education and prevention of these issues. And, that is what most on the committee seem to want to do.
VERBAL GRAFITTI - BLOGGERS PROVIDE THEIR OWN HATE john julius, today real estate, cape cod, team 300,
In the mean time, the local blogs continue their own form of verbal graffiti on any and every topic related to town, county or state governement. These blogs who had posted and commented about the graffiti incidents, lectured on the role of our town, and the NPFC in attacking hate crimes, yet hateful, visceral, angry and disturbing posts and comments are the norm for them.
I was sent a comment from a local hate-blog submitted by John Julius, one of the regular contributors who also is a regular at our council meetings who has something angry and hateful to say about just about anything government related.
john julius, today real estate, john julius team 300,
Examples from recents posts to the hate -bloggers
Postings and comments on a recent issue were in response to an article in the Cape Cod Times about a liaison to the airport committee who is concerned about a resident of the town who comes to airport committee meetings regularly. This town resident, Dick Andres, recently went to the airport to make a noise report and told an employee that a plane was so low he could have used his gun to shoot it down.
Now, most think of Mr. Andres as harmless. Anyone who works in or around town hall knows him. I’ve know him for years as the kind of “gadfly” we all need, a constant watch dog who at times makes things personal, but spares us from inappropriate hateful language. But in that Cape Cod Times article he is quoted actually saying he has more than one gun and it appears possible, according to that article, he has a license to carry a handgun. (update - the Cape Cod Times reports that Mr. Andres does not have a licence to carry a handgun and that the police investigation concluded with no charges.)
In the comment copied and pasted further below, Mr. Julius responds to a post to the CapeCog Blog authored by Gary Lopez. This comment is typical of John Julius; a man who comes to the podium at most town council meetings with threats of lawsuits and constantly has “proof” of the corruption he perceives is lurking around every corner of town hall. There is no talking to him; he doesn’t want to work with the town management and government, he just wants to continually find reasons to hate.
Julius is a face we see, recognizable to those who are familiar with local real estate as his photo appears in his print ads and he appears regularly, on camera, at town council meetings during public comment. But the main instigator of this hate, the author of this blog, Gary Lopez, sits at his computer and spouts accusations, never attending the town council, boards, committees, commission meetings where he claims the corruption is hatched. Lopez never actually faces or takes part in discussions with the perceptions of corruptions with those who he accuses. He just sits in his house and types his angry rhetoric, inciting his followers – thus has been dubbed, (or crowned,) the king of pajamas. With convoluted figures and manufactured “facts” about our town, he creates his own place to hate on a daily basis. And, this draws those who would rather HATE than work together.
This recent comment by John Julius on the issue of the limits placed on Mr. Andres after commenting about shooting at planes and it makes one wonder- does Julius want to live in a place that strives to eliminate hate? Or does he just want to live in a place where hate is acceptable, and the stronger the hate the better?
You be the judge:
Gary, good post. Yes, this IS completely RIDICULOUS. And YES, Mr. Howard SHOULD GO! leave. Get LOST! Join Margo Fenn and sayonara! Good bye! john julius, real estate, cape cod, team Mr. Andres IS a true gentleman and yes, he IS harmless. If this IS these moron’s WAY of trying to discredit him then they are nothing but a bunch of LOSERS. And that includes Mr. Mosby and Mr. Howard. Nice try to take the FOCUS off the REAL ISSUE and PROBLEMS which are certain individuals AND the airport in general!
today, 300
Let’s get BACK to the REAL focus, as in one RICO FEDERAL LAWSUIT against a few good ole boys in the ‘network’. And WHERE IS our golden leader, John Klimm in all this? WHERE are the leaders from the Barnstable Town Council? NOT ONE there has any GUTS at all because IF anyone there DID, they would have SUSPENDED the boys of the NETWORK a long time ago! So let’s get the focus BACK where it BELONGS! it is SICKENING that the Barnstable TAXPAYERS may have to fork over MILLIONS in this putrid lawsuit which involves the good old boy network!Good day to all and when you all see Dick Andres, shake the man’s hand. He IS really a TRUE gentleman. it is painfully obvious that the boys around town hall AND the airport DON’T LIKE anyone looking in on their affairs. Just like the Times worked hand in hand with our idiotic Manager in trying to discredit myself, Gary lopez, Frank Paparo, Peter Doiron and others WHO HAVE THE GUTS TO WATCH OVER THESE MORONS!
They do NOT like ANYONE watching their misdeeds. TOO ####### BAD! Get used to it because we are NOT going away. it may have worked with Cheeseburger Jim Walsh but WON’T with the rest of us.
We WILL remain committed until all these complete MORONS are ALL gone, ALL of them!
Barnstable strives to be a “No Place for Hate” community. How sad that Mr. Julius, and Gary Lopez are so full of hate. John Julius wants all the “complete morons gone” so that he can have a place to hate, is that how he sells houses in your village?

John Julius and Gary Lopez need anger management classes. Julius reminds me of a scorned high school kid who blames all of his problems on other people.
John Julius sells forclosure properties. (there are many fine upstanding agents working for that Real Estate Office by the way), I looked at the listings he has and many are bank-owned. (Is he a member of the realtor organizations? If not he is a sales person working under a principal). Even if that isn’t (his) specialty, is it what drives many of (his) listings to actually make it to market?
Forclosures are not the fault of a municpality, but the fault of a system (that includes) shady mortgage companies, giving people who really shouldn’t qualify for mortgages or who should at the least qualify for smaller mortgages, mortgages with higher monthly payments than they can afford.
These companies will forclose on properties where the mortgagee is just sixty days past due, then sell the property and make a bundle- leaving incredible misery in the wake.
It is sad, and it is a practice that has to stop.
Look around, and talk to your neighbors! The middle class families and people who are retired between the north-side of route 28 and the south side of route 6a are sprinkled with people who are close to being made to leave their homes because they can’t afford to pay the mortgages. Ask John Julius for addresses he knows all the addresses because he is after the listings for when they are forced out.
Ask him for the names of those who are losing their houses to the banks and they will tell you why. It is not because of the property or fire district taxes LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!
Who stands to gain from these awful losses???
A neighbor told me about a group of people who are organizing to look into forclosures on the cape and the companies that perpetuate the whole problem.
It should be interesting to see how many of these companies have sold and financed the same property more than once.
When these guys spout against government and blame the problems of society on anyone who wants to serve or who might want to tackle issues with cooperative measures as opposed to screaming and yelling, they are going after the wrong people.
We need to focus on the people who PROFIT FROM THE MISERY OF OTHERS!!!

Hi-
I finally had to say something, I think that everyone needs to know that the people that do the COG are not speaking for most people in this town.
Most people know what complete idiots they are and laugh at them when they speak at council meetings.
The world would be a better place without them, but since they are there we are all glad you are there to deal with them.
I don’t know how you guys put up with their childish crap and I admire all of you councilors and town workers for being able to stomach them on a regular basis.
Thanks for all you do. Don’t let the bullies get you down.

Hi-
It is us again. We have lived in hyannis for over 40 years and raised our kids here.
We were really upset about the grafitti paint and even more upset when it was on more than one place.
The lady who is getting the cog people involved is making this problem worse. We just found out she doesn’t even live in Hyannis. My husband thinks she owns a business in Hyannis, but she is not acting like she cares about Hyannis.
We want the police to take care of this problem. We don’t want people like this woman to get involved or get in the way.
We wrote letters to the editor but they weren’t printed and we are glad you are here to give us a place to say our say.
We love hyannis and we love our town. Nothing is perfect and we don’t always agree with the town government, but we give you all so much credit for being brave enough to step up to the plate. We are happy that we can call our town councilor or any town councilor and let them know what we think and they listen.
We have done that and had no problem. The No Place For Hate committee is a great thing and we are glad they are there. WE are scared about the grafitti but we are happy that the police are wrking on it.
We wish that crazy people who belong to the cog group would go away, they embarass us when they say they are citizens of this town. we don’t like what they say and they don’t (speak) for us. Do any of them live in Hyannis? My husband says Gary Lopez is a retired garbageman who lives in Centerville, but does Jon Julius even live in this town? He couldn’t find him in the phone book.

Greetings Janet & Co. I am “this Taryn woman”, who you don’t want involved in any way. I have owned and operated a retail shop on Main Street for 20 years, and have a vested and passionate interest in what goes on in Hyannis and every other town in Barnstable. The police did do their job in responding to the hate crime, and are still investigating. As a member of the response committee at the time of graffiti incident, it was our job to help the victims of the hate crime after the police had gathered evidence and made their reports. Here are notes from our NPFH April meeting, outlining our duties:
Create an incident report- Contact ADL for one they may have to use as an example
Set up line of communication for 2 scenarios:
1. Someone reports an incident to us (NPFH)
2. Someone reports an incident to BPD
We also want to have an appropriate response to incidents that can be covered in the media: helping to clean up graffiti or having a rally at a place or public support of a victim etc.
Note that it was our goal to have media coverage of our helping the victims and we specifically addressed helping to clean up graffiti.
Since the No Place For Hate Committee would not help these victims as defined above, my husband helped them out as a truly concerned citizen of the town. I have actually raised a few hundred dollars personally for the victims of the church.
As for Gary Lopez, are you saying that, while his opinions are expressed in a rude manner, they can have no validity because he was a garbage man?
My husband and I are not “crazy people”. We are simply people who want less talk and more action.
There was a small problem with the comments section on the site last week, and I respectfully suggest that you write to hyannisnews.com again. I assure you that your comments will be posted.
Feel free to contact me personally if you have any problems posting on hyannis news: taryn@tarynsmirror.com. I will be sure to relate your concerns to the publisher.

this post has been edited to remove questionable content
Taryn - Your energy would be best in a positive approach to problems, being so negative about everything puts you in the same category as the hate-mongers of the cog bloggers.
As far as Gary Lopez being a garbage man, you might want to do some homework. He refers to himself as mob-connected through his work as a garbageman.

FYI -
An outraged John Julius contacted me threatening legal action because his company name was used in one of the above comments.
I have removed the name of the company and edited the posting as there are other people involved in that company.
Mr. Julius also told me that *he* has every right to commit defamtion as those he defames are elected.
That is a question for another time.
Several people have asked why their comments from last week never made it to this post and to other posts on this blog. I appreciate the passion and enthusiasm but I want to keep the language clean and the critism of others fair.
I sent out several emails this morning and asked for cleaner comments, and yesterday and last night edited some of those that were ultimately posted.

I realize I am an offender and apologize. There is some serious hypocracey here after what he has done to you guys who stick your neck out to be councilers. I’m pretty sure my input was added to this blog after reading the following crap Julius put up on the “hate blog” as seadog calls them. He can blame forclosure rates on the town, and no one in the public can respond?
(editors note - this comment by John Julius was copied and pasted from a longer comment he posted to Gary Lopez’s blog, what a shame, this is really just sad when you think about it)
(again jj is john julius, not the author of this blog.)
Comment by lesrmore — June 12, 2007 #
OK everyone - lots of “craps” being thrown around here, and you guys know that that means — you’ve been edited.
I had to do some serious editing there, les -
The problem with blogs is that in some legal precedent setting cases blogs have proven to be a form a journalism.
Most newspapers adhere to a policy of not publishing letters to the editor if they are not signed. Of course this is not a law, this is generally established policy for the given newspaper.
Most blogs, however, allow people to post anonymously. This blog has, at the least, a requirement that you register with WordPress to create a user name. This means you give a valid email address where we can contact you if your post has an issue.
I truly don’t know who 98% of you are. I have my suspicions, but can’t be sure.
So, here we are as a form of journalism, yet we don’t follow the standard rules of participation.
It gets risky and this is why so many of you haven’t seen your comments approved for this post; there has been a lot of emotion related to this issue and the people involved.
Again, I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion, and really want your input, I just need you to consider the laws and my own rules about profanity.
In some cases after all the editing the posts begin to take on my voice, so I asked you to rewrite them.
I won’t be approving anymore posts until tomorrow, I need to work.
Thanks for all of your support and interest!!!

I am horrified at a post that was emailed to me this morning. Lopez has posted a message from Taryn Thoman that included some of the worst language that can be used against women.
Around 12:30 today he took it down and put up a version that was a bit more sanitized, and had slightly adjusted accusations that Taryn made against me that are completely untrue.
I did not want to be involved in any of this, but taryn involved me when she started mass emailing and included me, as well as referred to me.
This is ugly and sad and depressing. It is no surprise that Taryn has taken up with slog-cog-bloggers under the rein of the king of pajamas. But it is sad that it is at the expense of the No Place For Hate Committee.

He stays away from meetings for the most part but at times like this when things get heated, he and my daughters will most likely be attending meetings. He isn’t a big computer person but has started using the laptop and has read some of this and will be counting to ten if he comes to the meetings.
Comment by jjcc — June 13, 2007 #
A comment on the issue on Mr Andres. The Yarmouth Rep will be attending the meetings. I’ve know Mr Andres for a long time, he is a gentleman at all times but he has become frustrated on the noise issue like the thousands of other people in your Town and the Mid Cape Area. His comments probably shouldn’t have been made but I have heard worse. You, as a member of the Barnstable Town Council and now as President, need to take responsibility on this Airport. Read Mass Law, Chapter 90: Section 40A and the rest of the Law. It’s the responsibility of the Town Council when it comes to some of the issues concerning the Airport. Example, the Voluntary Visual Flight Paths were changed in 1999, This is an amendment to the Approach By Law that you have with Yarmouth, Yet the Town Council hasn’t today acted on this as the Law has stated. Maybe you should step back a little and really see what is going on. People like Mr. Andres are starting to become frustrated and comments will be made. Better Yet, Start obeying, and abiding by the law on the Airport!!.
Comment by midcapper — June 14, 2007 #
Mr. Sullivan,
There are reasonable concerns about the airport and serious limits put on the council and the manager per our charter. almost 7 years ago a question was put on the ballot that would have put the control over these airport decisions under control of the manager/council and this question went down in flames.
Unfortunatly, Tom, when critism becomes more entertainment than reason, the argument loses crediblity.
An educated critic is helpful. Please read our charter and help us make any changes within the charter.
Demands that we act beyond our control, accompanied by slanderous rhetoric - MORONS! and LOSERS etc as spouted in the example above posted by John Julius or whatever names he will use today erode credibility to this argument.
Also, I have know Dick Andres for a while now, and appreciate his demeanor. But, regardless of who you are and what your beef, you can’t go to an airport to complain and talk about shooting down airplanes as a possible solution. We all know him, but just suppose that early one morning he did reach the end of his rope and he shot at an airplane carrying one of our other regular council critics to his job in Nantucket?
We all know that is unlikely, but if it happened and it was known that this comment had been made and we had done nothing about it, would the federal government, while considering the history of the incident, not point fingers at those who witnessed the comments for not addressing the issue?

Police: Accused has no gun permit
By Patrick Cassidy
STAFF WRITER
June 13, 2007 6:00 AM
HYANNIS — A Centerville man who allegedly made threatening statements to a Barnstable Municipal Airport official about how a low-flying plane could be hit by gunfire does not have a permit to carry a handgun, according to the police.
Last month, Robert Howard, the Yarmouth liaison to the Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission, refused to attend meetings with Richard Andres, 73, the man who allegedly made the threatening comment.
Andres has maintained he would not shoot anybody and the statements attributed to him by airport officials are “absolutely wrong.”
Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald has confirmed Andres has a Firearms Identification Card but does not have a handgun permit.
The FID card allows Andres to own and use a shotgun or rifle for hunting, but it does not entitle him to carry a handgun in public.
MacDonald said an investigation into Andres’ allegedly threatening statement had been closed and police are confident there will be no more trouble.
Andres has attended airport commission meetings regularly for the past 20 years but was prohibited from other areas of the airport last month after the alleged threat.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Howard, the Yarmouth representative, said he is satisfied Andres does not pose a threat.
Howard said he has resumed attending airport commission meetings.

No Place for Hate Committee-
I am hearing reports that the meeting of this committee was productive and positive and the future is rosey for the work they will do.
Kudos to those who understand that cooler heads prevail!

Janet, I will take a look at your charter but the State Law is pretty clear that it is the Town Council’s responsibility when amendments are made to the Approaches. The approaches were amended in 1999 and this law ( Chapter 90) was not abide by. The Barnstable Airport/ Town of Barnstable has a height restriction on Private and Public property in Both Towns, Yet when the approaches were amended in 1999 the Barnstable Airport Commission didn’t take a vote on the changes and refer these changes to your council. I have also added a second law. The laws I refer to is as follows.
AIRCRAFT
Chapter 90: Section 40A Airport approach regulations by cities or towns
Section 40A.
Any city, except Boston, and any town, may by ordinance or by-law adopt, and may administer and enforce, in the manner and upon the conditions hereinafter prescribed, approach regulations relative to approaches to publicly owned airports, applicable to areas within such city or town, in this section and sections forty B to forty I, inclusive, called airport approach regulations. Such regulations may divide any such area into sections and may within each section regulate and restrict the height to which structures and trees may thereafter be erected or allowed to grow. Any such regulations may from time to time be amended or repealed. Such regulations and amendments thereto shall be effective when approved by the commission (MAC) and the attorney general and recorded as hereinafter provided. Such regulations or any amendments thereto shall as soon as may be after adoption and approval be recorded in the registry of deeds of each county and district in which any portion of the land to which such regulations apply is located, and notice that such regulations or amendments have been adopted shall be sent by mail to the owner of every parcel of land to any portion of which such regulations or amendments are applicable. For the purposes of this provision the person to whom the land was assessed in the last preceding annual tax levy shall be deemed to be the owner thereof, and the notice shall be addressed in the same manner as the notice of such tax, unless a different owner or a different address is known to be the correct one. Such notice shall also be given by publishing, in a newspaper of general circulation, if any, in each city and town in which any portion of the land subject to the regulations is located, a map of the area subject to the regulations, with sufficient explanatory matter to give the public and the owners of land reasonable notice of the adoption of the regulations or amendments, or by posting such map and explanatory matter in one or more public places in each such city and town.
Chapter 90: Section 40C Adoption, amendment or repeal of airport approach regulations; public hearing
Section 40C.
In a city airport approach regulations may be adopted, amended or repealed only by action of the city council, and in a town only by vote of the town, at a meeting called for the purpose, and in either case only after a public hearing held by the city council of the city or the selectmen of the town, at which hearing all persons who might be affected in their property by the regulations, all inhabitants of the city or town, all persons liable to taxation therein and all inhabitants of adjoining cities and towns shall have an opportunity to be heard. At least fifteen days’ notice of the time and place of the hearing shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation, if any, in the city or town. Airport approach regulations may be adopted by a city or town although the airport the approaches to which they are designed to protect is located in another city or town.

Late night tonight -
I have been getting a lot of emails about a couple of pieces of unfinished business.
Answers:
Yes. I will publish one or all or parts of the emails from Julius during his bout of personal harrassment about this blog.
Yes. The king of Pajamas fairy tale is still there - I actually am considering a private page for those who have passwords to view.
I would only keep it private unless or until Lopez starts attacking with libel and slander again. He really needs to see the truth about the way that recall ended and about what people really saw when he was creating all kinds of problems for us in boston with his inappropriate and embarrassing behavior…..

The following is the first of 6 emails sent by John Julius - this was in response to me asking him for his “famous libel lawyer from Hingham’s” contact information after he threatened to sue, which gave him reason to tell me to “go away and leave me alone” this emails features his remark that he has an “IMPECCABLE REPUTATION”

Thanks for the emails about the ongoing discussion. No he has no case. Yes we can mention his name and the office he sells out of, and yes we can mention the name he uses with his partners in listing and selling foreclosures.
There is no famous libel lawyer and there is no libel here. The man puts himself out there on camera, the blogs, letters to the editor, plantifs in baseless lawsuits against the town and quoted in newspapers spewing hate in each.
Nothing that was or is said here is going to hold up in court…..
thanks
there will be more to come in the near future….
Janet -

the following is the second of a series of emails threatening to sue me for libel for allowing discussion about who john julius is and who he works for - john julius has publicly announced his candidacy for charter commission, therefore he must be subject to the same freedom of being trashed in public, print, and on blogs as he feels anyone who works for, is elected to, or appointed to any position in the town of barnstable.
There were six emails sent to me, in all, and I will post them over the next few weeks…. stayed tuned….
