We’re celebrating green living, so, naturally, we wanted to know about the best places for living green. What cities across the country make it easier to live an eco-friendly life? That question gave birth to our COUNTRY HOME 2007 BEST GREEN PLACES REPORT, which we’ve compiled with the help of Sperling’s BestPlaces. The big list of the top 25 best places to live took into account all sorts of criteria—from air and watershed quality, miles of mass transit, and green power to farmers markets, organic producers and groceries, and more. Click the map for detailed results on our survey of 379 cities sorted by region.

Last week we received a beautiful framed award via fex-ex.  An unexpected and pleasant surprise.

Country Home Magazine - April
It seems that Country Home Magazine has selected us as one of the top 25 green cities in the country. This was done in conjunction with Sperlings Bestplaces and company that compiles research to determine the best place to live for various lifestyle priorities - see the details here

All too often, the discussion about Barnstable and green energy seems to focus on the strong opposition to the development of an industrial wind farm in the middle of Nantucket Sound. The Town of Barnstable’s commitment to renewable energy, energy conservation and innovative measures to address both seems to take a back seat. -

crazy madman creating conspiraciesIn the past few days, I have been at a function in Chatham, a meeting in Orleans, a visit with friends from Falmouth, at several meetings and just out and about from the grocery store to the beach.

I have been doing a lot of catching up with people, and many from all over the Cape many want to give their two cents about the recall and the crazy group of bloggers who cause so much trouble here in our town.

Craigville Beach and a horizon sans giant windmills April 20, 2007It is a beautiful day.
I have all of the windows open and am getting ready to pull out the seventh generation cleaning products when I am done working.

He yelled and screamed his vitriol from Beacon Hill to Town Hall before he slipped into his pajamas and closed the door to the outside

Here in New England we are often stuck inside for weeks at a time due to bad weather.
Studies show that lack of sunshine and the inability to be able to spend time in the outdoors, contribute to various depressions.

Maybe that is what prompts the continuing abhorrent behavior of some of our local bloggers.

IMUSIZING of local blogs

He yelled and screamed his vitriol from Beacon Hill to Town Hall before he slipped into his pajamas and closed the door to the outsideSaturday 4/21
Friday - 4/20/07 - I am amazed at how many people have responded to me about this post. Most people are reluctant to add a comment for several reasons. They are concerned that somehow this group will identify them and point the wrath in their direction. I have made sure that those who comment here can only be identified by their chosen user name.
Another reason, and this is sad, is for those who are new to the concept of blogging there seems to be a sense that only crazy angry conspiracy theorists blog, and those, like us, who dare to respond.
The fear is that to particpate is to be “one of them”. There are groups like COG who spew hatred, but there are thousands more blogs for discussion about any subject that interests you and most are civil. (I happen to enjoy a couple of Boston area blogs that discuss the ins and outs and ups and downs of the Red Sox. ) I will be writing an article/post on blogging in the near future.
Mean time, read on and check out those who have shared comments. By the way, apparently racial and ethnic slurs are not sick enough for these people - see comments.

LOPEZ’S COGSLOG IS NOT ABOVE RACIAL, SEXIST AND ETHNIC SLURS

madmanatcomputersm.jpgThe message on my voice mail this morning went something like this:

“Why can’t the local police DO something about these people? Isn’t just one blatant racial slur enough to shut this idiot down? How does he get away with this?”

My first response, typically, would be, “don’t read it… don’t give him the attention he craves.”

But, not everything is that simple.
The call came from a woman in town whose child is attending college in North Carolina and found the ugly local COGslog via a Google search. The Google search was related to a college communications class discussion about the Imus incident.

The young person has skin with some color, and according to this mother her young student has become tolerant of the ignorance of others who think that that color means one deserves less respect than others who check that Caucasian box on forms. This is an outgoing kid known for a big smile and contributions to school and home communities….this mother is and should be proud of such a fine young person.

This college student was incensed, according to the caller, and mother and child had a long and painful discussion about home-town ignorance.

angrysould.jpgThe comment in question comes from a man who likes to consider himself a leader of the miscreant conspiracy theorists who blog as “coggers. “

The comment referred to one of the town’s officials as an “uncle tom.”

I have not read this slur, because I am not interested in sloggin’ through the muck to find it on his blog, but the sentiment of this woman — this mother — who left this message, and so many others has been that they have gone to far, and it’s time to do something about it.

the fairy tale is coming soon …

April 15, 2007 at 12:42 pm | In barnstable town council, council president janet joakim | 1 Comment

kingcrown4.jpgOn March 20th, pajama king of the sloggers of cogbloggerville presented a story line that wove much of his own fiction throughout the actual events that took place at the end of the recall performance of his merry marionettes.

The king –

who never ventures outdoors, thus wearing pajamas

thinks we are all admiring his new clothes,

when all we can see are pajamas,

so full of holes.

Stay tuned! keep checking back for the fairy tale with dragons, and knights and wicked witches with long noses……
Expected date of publication?

Maybe tomorrow morning, maybe tonight, maybe tuesday ….

catching up on the fairy tales - only those who were there can actually know…

April 13, 2007 at 4:28 pm | In barnstable town council | No Comments

So, where were we?
Oh yeah, lies, lies and more lies…..

The debate continues. Why respond? You will just draw attention to them!
The only people who read that stuff are their only little band of pickeled puppets and puppet-masters.

They twist the truth, weave their own versions of history into convoluted and perverse diatrabes and sprinkle the sophomoric crap and racial and ethnic slurs to “Imus-ize” their pages, perhaps in some attempt to add attempts at humor…and wrap it all up in a media-like package, and call it all facts. Can we just ignore it?

Should we?

Well as the debate continues I want to respond to something that forwarded to me the night before we left to visit our oldest daughter who was kind enough to choose a college in Florida near a great beach.

I am lucky enough to have a friendly constituent who has been monitoring this slog and lets me know if there is something I might be interested in…… UPDATE! Its almost ready to be published! keep checking back for our own fairy tale, with the king of pajamas, the who, the witch with the long nose, the who, what?, and the marionette that cut his own strings…….

Finally, NBA players are endorsing affordable sneakers - will the image of these role models change?

I love this story. I used to be an enthusiastic basketball fan, until the gold chains, teenage recruits, ridiculous salaries, baggy shorts, and bad behavior of the players contributed to an overall change in image.  I shed a few tears when Larry Bird left, but little did I know that we were losing more than a player, the standards that seemed to represent the game had only just begun to slide.

Drinking breakfast - does this help you get through the day?

April 3, 2007 at 2:49 am | In barnstable town council | No Comments

If you find yourself showing up to important meetings in the morning, either still feeling (smelling like) the booze from the night before, or having to have a taste to get you to, or through, the meeting, you might want to consider that it is time to look the demon in the mirror and consider the anger has overcome your ability cope.
